Thanks for these thoughts, Koen! I completed my PhD in the discipline of Management of Technology and at the time at least philosophically I asked the question whether society controls technology or whether technology controls society. Which brings me to yet another hypothesis in response to your proposal that we slow down technological development. This hypothesis reads as follows: technological progress has reached a self-sustaining growth beyond societal control. From here more sub-hypotheses follow, for example that technology enjoys an intrinsic capacity to calibrate the difference between good and bad, or that technology will soon apply for legal standing.
